Terminal Basics

Learn the fundamentals of working with Kerminal's terminal emulator.

Quick Start

  1. Launch Kerminal - Opens with a terminal workspace ready to use
  2. Take the Tour - Press Ctrl+Shift+/ for an interactive feature tour
  3. Command Palette - Press Ctrl+Shift+P to discover all commands

macOS Users

Replace Ctrl with Cmd (⌘) for all shortcuts.

Working with Tabs

Creating Tabs

Managing Tabs

  • Switch: Click or Ctrl+1 through Ctrl+9
  • Reorder: Drag and drop
  • Close: Ctrl+W or click ×
  • Close others: Right-click → Close Other Tabs

Tab Context Menu

Right-click any tab for:

  • Rename / Change color
  • Duplicate / Split to new pane
  • Close / Close Others / Close All

Split Panels

Creating Splits

  • Focus panels: Ctrl+← / Ctrl+→ or click directly
  • Resize: Drag the divider between panels
  • Reset size: Double-click the divider
  • Close: Type exit or right-click tab → Close

Search & Find

Find in Terminal

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+F or F3
  2. Type your search term
  3. Enter = find next, Shift+Enter = find previous
  4. Escape to close

Options: Case sensitive, Regex, Whole word

Command History

  1. Press Ctrl+H
  2. Type to filter history
  3. Select and press Enter to execute

Productivity

  • Command Palette (Ctrl+Shift+P) - Quick access to everything
  • Learn shortcuts - See Keyboard Shortcuts
  • Color-code tabs - Red for prod, green for dev
  • Rename tabs - Right-click → Rename for clarity

Layout Tips

  • Ctrl+K × 3 = three-column layout
  • Ctrl+L × 2 = three-row layout
  • Combine for complex grid layouts
